Brides for Peace is a work of contemporary dance created by Jens van Daele. He was inspired by the living art project Brides on Tour by the Italian artists Pippa Bacca and Silvia Moro, that came to an untimely end. Jens wants to keep the memory of Pippa and Silvia’s work alive and, as it were, to continue their mission of peace. Partly by drawing attention to the story through his performances but also by making the audience aware of the various organisations that are working in support of women and non-violent peace. Pieter De Buysser, winner of the PTa trophy 2011, wrote the abrasive and supporting texts.
Hitch-hiking arts project
In 2008, to prove that the world is a less violent place than it might appear, Pippa and Silvia – both wearing wedding dresses and carrying a sign bearing the word Peace – started hitch-hiking from Milan to Jerusalem. However, they never made it that far. The arts project was halted before they could reach the Middle Eastern border. Shortly afterwards, a cruel twist of fate led to Pippa’s death. She was raped and murdered, her body discovered on the border between west and east, in the Turkish coastal town of Gebze.
Brides for Peace is a theatrical, lustful, gluttonous, sad, yet ultimately hopeful dance performance in honour of Pippa and Silvia. Two strong women each following their own heart blindly. “Not a pink cloud, but an image of moderated beauty” according to Jens in De Gelderlander, 11 March 2011.
About Jens van Daele’s Burning Bridges
In recent years, Jens van Daele (1972, Antwerp) makes his performances under the name of Jens van Daele’s Burning Bridges. It is a temporary collective of artists: dancers, musicians, writers, actors and dramatists. They build bridges together, but can also burn them again.
With the Swiss / French Ensemble Batida he made Spring Tide in 2013. This performance is inspired by Igor Stravinsky ‘Le Sacre du Printemps’. By 2015, it is British art painter Lucian Freud who serves as an inspiration for About Lucian. Inspiration for a performance are not only grandmasters from Russia or England. He also finds it closer to home. The life story of his own parents is central to Over Onze Vader. He combines for the first time his distinctive raw dance and live music with genuine text theater.
